Gary and Martin were both former child actors. Gary had appeared in movies for the Children's Film Foundation and Martin had appeared in the TV drama Glittering Prizes. The casting of the parts of the Kray Twins was one of the most hotly contested in recent British cinema. Others in the frame included the McGann brothers and Roger Daltry. The Krays is widely recognised along with The Long Good Friday as one of the best in modern British gangster movies.
The casting of real brothers in the leading roles only added to the film's believability. The film like the lives of the Krays is brutally violent. Both Kemp brothers worked really hard in their roles and gained great critical acclaim. The pretty boy popstar prejudice that many entered the cinema with was soon dispelled by performances.
