The guys didn’t take too long a break after returning from the Barricades tour. In September 1988 “Raw” was released as the first single from what was to be their last album “Heart Like A Sky”. Raw was inspired by the Alan Parker movie “Angel Heart” about New Orleans voodoo and the 12 inch mix of the song contained samples of Robert De Niro’s voice from the movie. The song was a big radio hit in the UK, but didn’t really dent the chart. By this time, Gary by his own admission was taking more control and not involving the rest of the band as much. In the recent BBC Radio 2 documentary he said

As a writer the songs that were more personal to me, I was finding harder to pass over to another singer. Not that I could ever have performed a song like Tony. And it was time to do another album as it always is time to do another album. Our method up until then was always the same. Pretty much me writing the song on my own and presenting it to the band and at that time computers had started to come out and I started to demo the songs for the Heart Like a Sky album, until virtually they were complete, played by computers. The guys would come in and they would hear the tracks with drums on and keyboards and even some little sample saxophone, bass, and quite understandably this was not really making the others feel as involved or feel happy about the situation. My kind of slightly controlling approach to the music, which really came out of my own frustration of really wanting to use other instruments I guess and other musicians I suppose, maybe not be in a band at all.”

Ten years of living out of each others' pockets was beginning to take its toll. The Kemp brothers took a break from the band to spread their wings and make a movie together. This was the beginning of the end.
